Scotland is a land of legend, but did you know that there are lots of folk stories that stem from right here on the Woodlands Estate. Trolls, witches, enchanted trees and even dragons are said to have lived here, but today we’re going to tell you about an enchanted place on the Woodlands Estate where surprises await at every turn? A place so captivating that some visitors are never seen again, and those who do return are often – changed! The Faerie Wood, situated towards the top of the Woodlands Estate is a magical realm steeped in history, mystery (and a touch of fairy dust).
The Celtic Rainforest
The Faerie Wood has stood for generations and it’s officially recognised as âancientâ on maps. The woods have an even bigger claim to fame though! Perhaps the reason it’s so popular with faeries is because itâs classified as an actual rainforest! Yes, you read that right: as part of the Celtic Rainforest, this unique habitat thrives in Scotlandâs warm, wet coastal climate. The combination of these conditions creates the perfect environment for some of the worldâs rarest bryophytes and lichens.  Itâs so rare, in fact, that itâs earned international acclaim from NatureScot as âincredibly rare on a global level.â Move over, Amazon!!
A faerie favourite
Perhaps itâs no wonder that fairies (or faeries, if youâre Scottish) find this magical place so irresistible. Who knows what spells they cast or stories they whisper among the ancient trees? While we canât promise youâll catch a glimpse of these elusive creatures, the woodlandâs mystical atmosphere might just convince you theyâre there.
Legend has it that faeries can be unpredictable. Some visitors to enchanted places are known to disappear, lured away by the otherworldly allure of the faerie realm. Others do return, but they come back changed. For your safety (and to avoid accidental trips to another dimension), we recommend sticking to the paths and avoiding solitary wandering.
