Dragons in our midst at Woodlands Glencoe

Legend & folklore in Glencoe UK

Scotland is a land of legend, but did you know that there are lots of folk stories that stem from right here on the Woodlands Estate. Faeries, witches, enchanted trees and even trolls are said to have lived here, but today we’re going to warn you to beware the Bheithir when on the Woodlands Estate.

Tucked away in the mountains behind us lies Beinn a’ Bheithir, or as it’s known in English ‘The Dragon’s Mountain’ and it’s every bit as dramatic as it sounds!

The peak of the thunderbolt serpent beast

To the south, the towering peak of Beinn a’ Bheithir looms over the glen, a place regarded with both awe and trepidation by locals. Its Gaelic name translates to the ‘Peak of the Thunderbolt Serpent Beast’, a moniker that gives a hint of the fearsome legend tied to this mountain. For this was once the domain of the venomous Bheithir, a dragon-like creature whose reign of terror remains the stuff of nightmares (and very gripping fireside tales).

A terror in the glen

The Bheithir was no ordinary dragon; she was a cunning and cruel beast with a particular taste for mischief (and village children!).  According to legend, she made her lair high in the mountains, descending into the glen during storms when her power was at its peak. Thunder and lightning were said to be the heralds of her arrival, as her massive tail thrashed along landscape and her venomous screeches echoed through Glencoe. For the villagers, she was a terror that could not be ignored.

A hero’s sacrifice

Many tried to defeat the Bheithir, but human strength was no match for her. It wasn’t until a brave ferryman named Charles came up with a daring plan that her reign of terror came to an end. During one particularly violent storm, Charles lured the beast onto his boat using burning animal carcasses as bait. As she feasted, Charles, hidden among the flames, drove his spear through her throat. The victory came at a cost, however, as Charles sacrificed himself to save the village.

The dragon’s lingering presence

Even now, the legend lives on. Locals say that during wild storms, if you listen closely, you can still hear the Bheithir’s anguished screeches echoing through the glen. Whether it’s the wind, the thunder or something more, who’s to say? One thing is certain: Beinn a’ Bheithir’s dramatic silhouette and storied past continue to inspire us all on the Woodlands Estate.  We have even named our popular Dragon’s Circle golf membership after the beast!
