A fascinating walk involving folk stories, science and scenery

Legend & folklore in Glencoe UK

Scotland is a land of legend, but did you know that there are lots of folk stories that stem from right here on the Woodlands Estate. Faerieswitchesenchanted trees and even trolls are said to have lived here, but today we’re going to follow the Rattling River from the Woodlands Estate, up to the Dragon’s Cauldron.

Let’s go for a walk!

The granite mountains above the Woodlands Estate soar to a height of almost 1000m.  These majestic giants, over 400 million years old, have seen the rise and fall of glaciers, the arrival of humanity and even a dragon or two!

For hillwalkers and climbers, this is paradise. Among these towering heights are Sgorr Bhan, Sgorr Dhearg, Sgorr Dhonuill & Creag Ghorm, but the star of the show is Beinn a’ Bheithir, ominously translated to The Mountain of the Thunderbolt Serpent Beast. Yes, folks, according to legend, a dragon calls this mountain home! While sightings have been scarce (so far), the lore adds a thrilling touch to your walking adventure.

As you gaze up at these dramatic peaks, you might notice sparkling streams tumbling down their craggy slopes. These waters converge to form the Abhainn Greadhain.  The name translates to The Rattling River, named for the clattering rocks that tumble along its bed during storms.

If walking is too much like hard work, you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the Rattling River (with or without a lime margarita) when you stay at one of our RiverBeds Luxury Wee Lodges with hot tubs, which overhang the river!

If you’re feeling adventurous, why not follow the rattling river upstream into the legendary Dragon’s Cauldron? The journey takes you along the breathtaking Horseshoe Walk, a three-hour loop that feels like stepping into a fantasy novel. Expect panoramic views of lochs and mountains, and keep an eye out for a shimmer in the shadows, could it be the dragon itself?

A slice of science!

The walk also holds some seriously good eco-cred!  At the car park at the very top of the Woodlands Estate, you’ll see that humans have tapped into the Rattling River’s powerful flow for something extraordinary.

In 2019, a hydroelectric dam was built, capable of generating an impressive 554kW at peak and producing 1.7GWh annually – enough to power 420 homes!

This modern feat of engineering carries forward the legacy of the mighty dam in nearby Kinlochleven, constructed by the British Aluminium Company in 1907. Kinlochleven was the first village in the world where every single home had electricity. Move over, Tesla!
