Ogres, Cyclopes & Trolls

Legend & folklore in Glencoe UK

Scotland is a land of legend, but did you know that there are lots of folk stories that stem from right here on the Woodlands Estate. Faeries, witches, enchanted trees and even dragons are said to have lived here, but today we’re going to tell you (well, warn you rather) to beware the bridge on the Woodlands Estate!

For centuries, an unassuming bridge at the foot of the Woodlands Estate has been more than a convenient way to avoid wet socks. It’s reputed to be the lair of some of mythology’s most notoriously unpleasant housemates; creatures you certainly wouldn’t invite to your annual cheese-and-wine night!

The local legends speak of three formidable freeloaders who’ve made this bridge their stomping ground: Ogres, Trolls and Cyclopes.

If you’re planning to cross, here’s what you need to know.

Ogres

Imagine a person who’s all brawn, no brain and has been bulking since the Jurassic period. These massive meatheads are the bridge’s resident landlords – muscular, merciless and notoriously bad listeners. Well, sort of.  See, Ogres actually have incredible hearing. They can hear a pin drop or a faerie sneeze. Unfortunately, their response is less ‘sympathetic ear’ and more ‘crush it into the ground like a tin can’.

Survival tip
Please be sure to whisper as you tiptoe past. If an Ogre decides to come at you like a runaway freight train, aim for the sweet spot: that vulnerable area between its neck and spine. Hit it hard enough and you might just have a chance to escape. If you miss?  Well, let’s just say the Ogre will be having you for lunch.

Cyclopes

Cyclopes are like the bridge’s resident blacksmiths. These big guys have a knack for forging weapons, which puts them ahead of their bridge buddies in the intellect department.

But don’t let their impressive arsenal fool you. Cyclopes have one glaring weakness (pun fully intended): their single, oversized eye. If you can blind them, you’ve got a shot at survival. Of course, their enormous size and habit of swinging gigantic clubs might complicate things.

Survival tip
If you find yourself face-to-face with a Cyclops, aim for the eye. Just be quick about it!

Trolls

Trolls are mean, they’re ugly and they’ve got skin thicker than a rhino! Fortunately, Trolls are also incredibly dim. Their biggest weakness?  Fire. Light a match near a Troll and you’ve basically won.  Trolls might not be smart, but they make up for it with aggression and relentless persistence.

Survival tip
Carry a lighter, a torch or even a slightly charred marshmallow! Honestly, anything flame-like will do. If that fails, distract them with a riddle.  They’ll spend hours trying to solve it while you make your getaway!

Final thoughts

Whether you’re dealing with an Ogre’s ear-splitting temper tantrum, a Cyclops’ giant eye of doom or a Troll’s pyrophobia, one thing is clear, this bridge is not for the faint-hearted. But hey, with a little wit, some quick thinking and maybe a flamethrower, you might just make it across in one piece.

So, pack your survival gear, bring your bravado and remember, when it comes to mythological bridge trolls, it’s all fun and games.

Good luck, brave traveller. You’re going to need it.
