Your guide to mastering the wood-burning stove
We’ve left you enough kindling and logs to keep things toasty for a whole day; however, if you’re planning on keeping the fire roaring for longer, just give us a call or pop into reception. Extra wood is available from reception for £15 and we’ll deliver it straight to your lodge.
Here are our top tips for getting that perfect crackling fire going:
Check the vents: Make sure all the air vents on the stove are open. Fire loves air! (Also, double check there’s nothing flammable sitting too close to the stove).
Start your fire Scandinavian-style: Open the door and build your fire using the “Scandi Method” where you stack the kindling and smaller logs carefully so nothing tumbles out once it’s burning.
Leave the door slightly ajar: Not wide open, just a little crack to let in plenty of oxygen.
Watch the magic fan: Once the fan on top starts whirring, you can add some bigger logs. Now’s the time to close and lock the door (heatproof gloves are provided, trust us, you’ll need them!).
Keep an eye on the thermometer: When the flue temperature hits around 275°C, slowly start closing the vents. This helps the stove run more efficiently. Aim to close them as much as you can without snuffing out the flames.
The sweet spot: Between 275°C and 300°C is the Goldilocks zone. Any hotter and you’ll be living in a sauna.
Top-ups & tweaks: Add more wood whenever the temperature drops below range. If the flames die out completely, open the vents until the fire is dancing again, then gently close them back down to that “just right” setting.
Safety first: Be extra careful when adding wood or opening the stove door. And please don’t leave the stove burning unattended.
