The Glencoe Greenway
If you’re looking for a fun bike ride in Glencoe without straying too far from Woodlands Activity Centre, then the Glencoe Greenway is a fantastic choice. From the Woodlands Estate, you can join a 13-mile loop, which is packed with incredible scenery, history, food stops and even a Harry Potter filming location! Thanks to the newly built underpass on the A82, it’s now safer and easier than ever to explore this iconic glen on one of our e-bikes.
If you fancy exploring in the opposite direction and heading west on your e-bike instead, then take a look at this amazing ride to Port Appin too!
Route overview
Start/End: Woodlands Activity Centre
Distance: 13.6 mile circular
Time: 1hr 15mins (not including stops)
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Battery: Easily manageable on eco mode with a few boosts of turbo if you fancy a sprint!
Woodlands to Glencoe Village: miles 0 – 2 (10 mins)
From the get-go, the Caledonia Way makes navigation a breeze. This incredibly scenic long-distance cycle path stretches over 230 miles and winds its way through some of the most spectacular landscapes in Scotland.
Start your adventure at the top of the Woodlands Estate where you will turn left onto the Caledonia Way cycle path and enjoy a gentle ride until you reach the off-road path that runs alongside the A82.
As the path brings you towards Glencoe Village, resist the temptation to cross the road. Instead, stay on the path running alongside the A82. You’ll come back into the village later on, but for now, keep rolling straight ahead.
Glencoe Village to Visitor Centre: miles 2 – 4 (10 mins)
Your first proper stop. The Visitor Centre is a great place to enjoy a coffee and a breather, with spectacular views over the glen. Inside, you can learn about the volcanic history that shaped Glencoe, as well as the infamous Massacre of 1692. Outside, you can visit an authentic turf house and discover what life was once like in the glen. Don’t forget to say hello to the friendly Highland cows who graze nearby.
Visitor Centre to the underpass: miles 4 – 5 (10 mins)
Soon after leaving the Visitor Centre you’ll reach the brand-new underpass. This clever addition was opened in early 2025 making it super safe to cross the busy A82. The underpass will deliver you onto the left-hand side of the road where you can whizz along until the next stop.
The underpass to Signal Rock: miles 5 – 6 (10 mins)
A short pedal brings you to Signal Rock, a site steeped in legend. Folklore says it was here the signal was given to start the Glencoe Massacre, though some believe it was used by clans to communicate long before then. The short woodland walk (20–30 minutes) makes for a perfect leg-stretch and picnic spot beneath the pines. If you’re a Harry Potter fan, this is also the jumping-off point for the short walk to the filming location of Hagrid’s Hut from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The hut might be gone these days, but the setting remains magic, with views across Torren Lochan to the Pap of Glencoe.
Signal Rock to Clachaig Inn: miles 6 – 7 mile (5 mins)
Follow the path until you spot a left-hand turn leading down to the legendary Clachaig Inn. This Highland institution is the perfect place to refuel with hearty pub grub, a dram or a well-earned pint. Sit outside if the weather allows for unbeatable views of the Three Sisters.
Clachaig Inn to Glencoe Village: miles 7 – 11 (20 mins)
From the Clachaig Inn, the quiet single-track road takes you all the way back into Glencoe Village. This is a peaceful stretch of the ride with low traffic and some lovely open views of the valley. Before re-entering the village, you can take a short diversion up to Glencoe Lochan. This man-made woodland loch was created in the 19th century for Lady Strathcona, who missed the landscapes of her Canadian homeland. Today, the loop around the water is a gentle, family-friendly stroll with mirrored reflections of the pines and mountains on still days. This stretch of the route also offers some inviting wild-swimming spots. On a warm day, it’s the perfect place to cool off with a paddle or a dip before the final stretch.
Home time: miles 11 – 13.6 miles (10 mins)
Cycle through Glencoe Village, carefully cross the A82 and rejoin the track rolling easily back to Woodlands, finishing your loop where you started.
