Legend & folklore in Glencoe UK

Scotland is a land of legend, but did you know that there are lots of folk stories that stem from right here on the Woodlands Estate. Faerieswitches, dragons and even trolls are said to have lived here, but today we’re going to romance you with the tale of the Marriage Trees on the Woodlands Estate.

The Marriage Trees

Standing proudly in the heart of the Woodlands Estate are two magnificent Linden trees, also known as Lime trees. These trees aren’t just any ordinary flora, they’re dripping with romance, local lore and are considered the estate’s very own love gurus!

A legend with a slice of science

According to legend, two starry-eyed lovers planted these towering beauties on their wedding day as a symbol of their everlasting bond. Known as ‘marriage trees’, they have gained quite the reputation over the years, with locals swearing that if you stand between the trees and steal a kiss from your sweetheart, your union will be blessed with a lifetime of good fortune. Who needs a genie in a bottle when you have these leafy lovebirds?

When trees like the Lindens grow close together, they can actually start to merge. It’s called inosculation, which comes from the Latin word ōsculārī, meaning ‘to kiss inwardly’. It’s basically the tree version of holding hands forever. Over time, their trunks and branches support each other and become stronger together. If that’s not a metaphor for a great relationship, we don’t know what is.
