Our efforts to protect nature in Glencoe
Ancient Beech Trees on the Woodlands Estate are the true characters of the grounds. Majestic, timeless (and just a little bit stubborn). These venerable giants have been standing tall for centuries, quietly observing everything from historic milestones to segways gliding below them. They’ve really seen it all and, if trees could talk, they’d surely have some fascinating stories to share!
Unfortunately, even these seasoned storytellers aren’t immune to challenges. Like many Beech trees across the country, ours have fallen victim to Beech Bark Disease, a pesky fungus that has put a damper on their health and shortened their lifespan. But don’t worry; they’re not giving up without a fight! For now, they’re still standing strong, providing a home to countless critters and adding their distinctive charm to the landscape.
When their time eventually comes, most likely during a dramatic storm (they do love to make an exit), they’ll continue to give back to nature, enriching the soil and creating new habitats for wildlife.
If you take a walk around the Woodlands Estate, we kindly ask you to admire these lovable old souls from a safe distance, especially when the weather turns moody!
Planting for the future
One of the most impactful steps we’ve taken is significantly increasing the number of trees across the Woodlands Estate. To date, we have planted thousands of native trees (with lots of Beech included), ensuring that future generations will enjoy the same lush woodlands and vibrant ecosystems that we cherish today.
These efforts include a special focus on Scots Pines, a native species that adds to the unique character of the Woodlands Estate. During the festive season, the terraces of all twenty-one luxury lodges across the estate are adorned with fairy-lit, potted Scots Pine trees. Â After the Christmas season is over, the trees are lovingly planted back on the estate, symbolising growth and renewal.
Honouring milestones with nature
We’ve also invited our lodge guests to take part in our sustainable journey. Newlyweds who celebrate their special day with us can plant a tree to mark the beginning of their life together. This growing tradition allows couples to leave a lasting legacy on the Woodlands Estate, a symbol of love and continuity that flourishes alongside nature.
A shared responsibility
Sustainability is not just a project for us; it’s a philosophy. From thoughtful reforestation efforts to encouraging responsible interactions with nature, we’re proud to create an experience that celebrates both luxury and environmental stewardship.
We’re grateful to those who golf with us, stay with us or use the Activity Centre for joining us on this journey.  Each visit supports our commitment to protecting and enhancing this extraordinary estate. Together, we’re not just enjoying nature, we’re ensuring its future.
